Golden Seals Name Their Core Four
LADNER -- The Metro Vancouver Golden Seals announced Thursday which four players they'll be protecting and which three players they won't be protecting heading into the upcoming draft in the Ladner Floor Hockey League.
General Manager Kelcey Brade was once again asked to make a difficult decision, much like he did at the trade deadline to acquire the goaltending services of Arran Baird, but this time he was given the difficult task of naming the Seals 'Core Four.'
The Seals will be protecting for the 2008-2009 season the following 4 players:
Forward Tyler Lietz Forward Kelcey Brade Forward Jim Pearse Forward Mark Thompson
The Seals are releasing the following 3 players:
Goalie Arran Baird Forward Stu Read Forward Allan Ries
This decision comes after several conversations with numerous players and advisors in which the team's future was discussed. On Monday it was made known to Brade that Baird wanted to remain with the club for the upcoming season.
But after consulting with team organizer Mark Thompson and star forward Tyler Lietz the decision became a little clearer as to what needed to be done. With the high level of up front talent on this team they would have to give up on a strength and that would be their goaltending in order to fall under the salary cap.
The Seals wish Baird luck and thank him for his outstanding goaltending down the stretch and in the playoffs.
The Golden Seals also released Captain Stu Read. Read wasn't available for comment and the Seals wouldn't say the reasoning behind him being let go.
The Seals would also like to extend their thanks to Allan Ries for his time spent with the club. His hard-working presence and game preparation will be greatly missed.

I do remember Vic telling all team GM's that May 1st was the deadline. The Whalers do hope to get their core 4 in this week some time. Let's hope the commish doesn't take any disiplinary action on the teams that forgot! Good job Seals for being way ahead of the game. I think it's a good idea to get the core 4 done early that way some newer teams or existing teams can make some free agent signings. My question that I will discuss with Vic is whether or not teams can go with a core 2 or 3 while stating which players they will be releasing, that way other teams could try and sign the released players giving those players a chance to either go in the draft or get signed.

Hah for those who are confused, the start date of making core 4's is May 1'st. Therefore, any team that wishes to make a core 4 to head into August's draft has to start making their core 4's as soon as possible, as the first 12 teams to confirm their core 4 will have their team set for the draft.
Any entries after the 12 teams have been set will go to the draft and will have to wait until August to knwo where they are going to play. Hope this helps.

wait, no no this was not the deadline of "4 player cores", only the deadline (may 1st) to start being able to sign out of league players into a "4 player core"
basically you can now sign players from other teams and new players to the league into your protected 4's now at this time...
it will be a while before the core 4 players must be finalized and the draft takes place, dont worry.

scrantonicity is no more. but for myself i am going into the draft as a goalie, unless somoeone needs a goalie for their core four let me know. if someone wants me for player then i will but i am mainly going in the draft as a goalie.
